Kerala Fish Curry with Ground Coconut


Kerala Pacha Theenga Aracha Meen Curry

Ingredients:

  1. Sardine Fish -  4 to 5 nos.
  2. Grated Coconut - 1 cup
  3. Shallots - 4 to 5 
  4. Turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp
  5. Red Chilli powder - 1.5 tbsp
  6. Coriander powder - 3/4 tbsp
  7. Water - for grinding
  8. Ginger - 1 inch stick
  9. Slit green chillies - 3 to 4 
  10. Salt - to taste
  11. Kudampuli (Garcinia) - 1 whole



For Garnish:

  1. Coconut Oil - 3 tbsp
  2. Mustard Seeds - 1 tsp
  3. Shallots - 2
  4. Curry Leaves 


Preparation:

  1. Clean and wash the fish using rock salt and cut them into 2 or 3 pieces each.
  2. Make a fine coconut paste, by grinding the ingredients 2 to 7 in a mixer grinder.
  3. Now add the above mixture to the fish, add enough water to make a curry.
  4. Add salt, crushed ginger, green chillies, kudampuli to this. 
  5. Cover and cook until the fish is cooked. This should take 8 to 10 minutes.
  6. For the garnish, take a pan and heat some coconut oil. To this add mustard seeds and allow it to splutter. Now add sliced shallots and fry till they are golden brown. Add the curry leaves and fry.
  7. Now add this garnish to the fish curry and mix well.
  8. Fish curry is ready to be served with rice.


Tip: Can add slightly ripe mango to the curry, while cooking the fish. Gives the curry a nice flavour.
