Sweet and Sour Dates and Lemon Pickle | Homemade Pickle Recipe


Today's recipe is a sweet and sour pickle made from dates and lemon. The sweetness from the dates and the sourness of the lemon gives it a nice and unique flavour. It is served along with Biryani and Ghee Rice in most of the kerala style restaurants.


Ingredients:
Lemon - 10 nos.
Dates - 10 nos.
Gingelly Oil - 3 tbsp
Mustard Seeds - 1 tsp
Dry Red Chilli - 3
Sliced Ginger - 1 tbsp
Sliced Garlic - 2 tbsp
Green Chilli - 3
Curry Leaves - 3 sticks
Turmeric Powder - 1/2 tsp
Red Chilli Powder - 3 tbsp
Fenugreek Powder - 1/2 tsp
Asoefatida - 1/2 tsp
Water - 1/2 cup
Salt - To taste
White Vinegar - 1/4 cup
Jaggery - 2 tbsp


Preparation:
Cut the lemon into 4 to 6 pieces. Add some salt and mix well. Set aside for 4 to 5 hours.
Remove the seeds from the dates and cut into 4 pieces.
Heat Gingelly oil in a pan. Once hot, add mustard seeds and wait until it splutters.
Add dry red chilli and fry for few seconds.
Add sliced ginger, garlic, green chillies and curry leaves and saute.
Add turmeric powder, red chilli powder, fenugreek powder, asoefatida and salt and fry on a low flame until the raw smell is gone.
Add chopped dates and mix well.
Pour water and bring it to a boil.
Once the mixture thickens, add lemon pieces. I microwaved the lemon pieces for about 3 to 4 minutes to make it slightly soft.
Mix this well.
Next add some white vinegar and mix it again.
Check the salt and add more if required.
Finally add jaggery and mix well. Cook for another 5 more minutes or until the mixture thickens.
The Dates and Lemon pickle is ready to be served.
