Theeyal is yet another famous delicacy in Kerala cuisine. It is basically roasted coconut gravy to which we can add different kinds of veggies and make a curry. For the non-veg version, we can add some prawns as well. Over here we will be making Theeyal with Prawns and Drumstick!!

- Medium sized Prawns (cleaned and de-veined) - 10 to 20
- Sliced Onions – 2
- Chopped Potato (cut into cubes) – 1
- Sliced Tomato – 2
- Drumstick – 2
- Slit Green Chilies - 3
- Grated Coconut – 1 cup
- Small onion/Shallot – 3 to 4
- Saunf – ½ tsp
- Turmeric powder – ½ tsp
- Chilli Powder – 1 tsp
- Coriander powder – 1.5 tsp
- Coconut oil – 4 tbsp
- Mustard seeds – ½ tsp
- Curry Leaves – 10 to 15
Preparation
- Heat a pan. Add 2 tbsp of oil.
- Add the grated coconut to this and stir.
- Add sliced shallots and saunf to this and fry on a medium flame until the coconut starts changing colour. Keep stirring continuously.
- Once the coconut turns slight brown (do not overdo it, else the mixture will become bitter), add turmeric powder, chilli powder and coriander powder and mix well.
- Fry for another 2 minutes until the raw smell of the chili and coriander powder is gone.
- Remove from flame and allow it to cool for 3 to 4 minutes.
- Transfer the coconut mixture to a mixer grinder, add water and grind until it becomes a smooth paste.
- Meanwhile take a pan. Add the sliced onions, potato, green chilies, salt and water and mix well.
- Add the washed prawns to this.
- Cover and cook on a medium flame until the prawns are cooked.
- Add the drumstick and cook for another 10 mins until drumstick gets cooked.
- Add the sliced tomatoes and cook until it turns soft.
- Now add the coconut paste to this and mix well. Check the salt and add more if required. Cook on a low flame for 5 to 7 minutes.
- For the garnish, heat 2 tbsp of coconut oil in a pan.
- Add mustard seeds and wait until it splutters.
- Add the curry leaves and fry.
- Pour this garnish onto the prawns gravy and mix well.
- Delicious Kerala Style Prawns Theeyal is ready to be served.
- Serve hot with rice.
