Kerala Style Prawns Theeyal


Theeyal is yet another famous delicacy in Kerala cuisine. It is basically roasted coconut gravy to which we can add different kinds of veggies and make a curry. For the non-veg version, we can add some prawns as well. Over here we will be making Theeyal with Prawns and Drumstick!!

Ingredients
  1. Medium sized Prawns (cleaned and de-veined) -  10 to 20
  2. Sliced Onions – 2
  3. Chopped Potato (cut into cubes) – 1
  4. Sliced Tomato – 2
  5. Drumstick – 2
  6. Slit Green Chilies - 3
  7. Grated Coconut – 1 cup
  8. Small onion/Shallot – 3 to 4
  9. Saunf – ½ tsp
  10. Turmeric powder – ½ tsp
  11. Chilli Powder – 1 tsp
  12. Coriander powder – 1.5 tsp
  13. Coconut oil – 4 tbsp
  14. Mustard seeds – ½ tsp
  15. Curry Leaves – 10 to 15


Preparation
  1. Heat a pan. Add 2 tbsp of oil.
  2. Add the grated coconut to this and stir.
  3. Add sliced shallots and saunf to this and fry on a medium flame until the coconut starts changing colour. Keep stirring continuously.
  4. Once the coconut turns slight brown (do not overdo it, else the mixture will become bitter), add turmeric powder, chilli powder and coriander powder and mix well.
  5. Fry for another 2 minutes until the raw smell of the chili and coriander powder is gone.
  6. Remove from flame and allow it to cool for 3 to 4 minutes.
  7. Transfer the coconut mixture to a mixer grinder, add water and grind until it becomes a smooth paste.
  8. Meanwhile take a pan. Add the sliced onions, potato, green chilies, salt and water and mix well.
  9. Add the washed prawns to this.
  10. Cover and cook on a medium flame until the prawns are cooked.
  11. Add the drumstick and cook for another 10 mins until drumstick gets cooked.
  12. Add the sliced tomatoes and cook until it turns soft.
  13. Now add the coconut paste to this and mix well. Check the salt and add more if required. Cook on a low flame for 5 to 7 minutes.
  14. For the garnish, heat 2 tbsp of coconut oil in a pan.
  15. Add mustard seeds and wait until it splutters.
  16. Add the curry leaves and fry.
  17. Pour this garnish onto the prawns gravy and mix well.
  18. Delicious Kerala Style Prawns Theeyal is ready to be served.
  19. Serve hot with rice.
