Green Gram Dal Curry (Kerala Style - Parippu Curry)


Ingredients:

  1. Green Gram - 1 cup
  2. Garlic cloves - 2 to 3 nos.
  3. Jeera powder - 1tsp
  4. Grated coconut - 1/2 cup
  5. Green chillies - 2 to 3 nos.
  6. Turmeric powder - 1 tsp
  7. Salt - to taste
Garnish:
  1. Coconut oil - 2 tbsp
  2. Mustard seeds - 1 tsp
  3. Curry leaves
  4. Dry Red chillies - 2 to 3 nos.
Preparation:
  1. Roast the green gram on medium flame until the roasted smell comes out and the colour starts to change.
  2. Crush them coarsely in a mixer, just once. DO not overdo it.
  3. Separate out the skin from the roasted gram using a sieve (muram in malayalam)
  4. Pressure cook the dal with some salt, green chilli and water until 1 or 2 whistles.
  5. Grind the grated coconut along with turmeric, garlic and jeera powder to a fine paste.
  6. Take coconut oil in a frying pan.
  7. Add mustard seeds and wait until it splutters.
  8. Add Dry red chilli and curry leaves.
  9. Add the cooked dal into this.
  10. Add the coconut paste to this and allow it to boil.
  11. Remove from flame when it is done.
  12. Serve hot with rice and papad.
